Brain Fitness

The number one excuse I get from those who do not exercise is........any guesses......”I don’t have time”.. We have to make time for our health...otherwise what is the point of everything we do if we are not going to be around? The truth is, exercise can find us time. Scientific fact: exercise improves our cognitive functioning, improving concentration and mental alertness. Do you want to increase brain power? Go workout.
According to Dr. Patrick Hogan, Neurologist in Tacoma Washington: “Learning, remembering, reasoning, alertness, and mood improve with fitness, a physical workout is better than any medicine. It's the single most powerful thing you can do for your brain." Apparently, we fitness fanatics have a larger hippocampus than couch potatoes. The hippocampus is a part of the brain that plays a key role in learning and memory.

Exercise increases oxygen flow into the brain, which reduces brain-bound free radicals. One of the most interesting findings of the past few decades is that an increase in oxygen is always accompanied by an uptick in mental sharpness.

Exercise acts directly on the molecular machinery of the brain itself. It increases neurons’ creation, survival, and resistance to damage and stress.

Seratonin is a brain chemical - better known as the feel good hormone. Seratonin has a number of good buddies - dopamine, norepinephrine, insulin, melatonin, prostaglandin...to name a few. All of these hormones are influenced my our lifestyle habits: nutrition, exercise, sleep, sunlight, stress, smoking & alcohol. These brain chemicals really control a good chunk of our personality, moods, cognitive abilities, weight management and ultimately wear and tear on our major organs. Learning how to level off these hormones is critical to our health. The great news is, with an effective program.

And again, let’s not forget eating for brain power. There was a study done recently that said that having a higher ratio of fatty foods for two consecutive days can decrease cognitive functioning. We have a long list of studies that show us the impact of sugary foods on behavior and thinking. Cutting out carbs in NOT a healthy nutritional program, either. The brain ONLY takes its energy from carbs. We really need to learn to choose the correct foods & fitness program, that work together, and fit within out lifestyle, and our preferences. Yes, it is much more possible than you think!
